The Tanning Process

What causes our skin to tan in the presence of sunlight?

Ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) light from the sun is absorbed by your skin. This stimulates the production of melanin, a natural pigment that protects your skin from over-exposure to the sun’s rays. Your skin deepens in colour as the melanin builds up in your cells and forms a protective barrier against UV radiation.

UVA light is also known as the bronzing ray as it’s the type predominately responsible for tanning. Although UVA is ultimately what causes the melanin to darken it’s the UVB that jumpstarts the process by triggering increased melanin production. UVB rays are shorter and more powerful than UVA and too much of these can result in sunburn.

Professional tanning equipment delivers a scientific breakthrough to provide your skin with the correct exposure to light necessary to tan but not burn. At Hollywood Tan you can enjoy state-of-the-art sun beds that produce UVA almost exclusively, with just enough UVB to start the tanning process. This results in a faster, deeper, and longer-lasting tan. This highly sophisticated tanning method is available at different levels in each of our tanning systems.
